How to Squeegee Windows: The Streak-Free Technique
Four moves in order — wet, tilt, overlap, wipe. The technique professionals use, and the habits that leave streaks behind.
Squeegeeing windows comes down to four moves: wet the glass with a washer, tilt the squeegee so the water channels downward, pull overlapping strokes that each start on dry glass, and wipe the blade between strokes. What you need
- A 35 cm or 45 cm window squeegee with an unnicked rubber — 35 cm for small panes, 45 cm for big glass
- A microfibre window washer (T-bar and sleeve)
- A bucket of water with a small squeeze of dishwashing soap — enough for glide, not foam
- One lint-free cloth for edges and sills
The technique, stroke by stroke
1. Wash the glass properly
Load the washer, then scrub the whole pane — edges and corners first, where the grit sits. The washer’s job is to lift dirt into the water so the squeegee can carry it off. Glass that is only misted, not washed, is why spray-and-cloth cleaning smears.
2. Cut a dry starting strip
Tip the squeegee nearly parallel to the glass and pull a narrow strip dry along the top edge of the pane. Every following stroke will start from this dry strip — starting on dry glass is the single rule that prevents drip lines.
3. Pull overlapping strokes at a constant angle
Hold the blade at roughly 30–45 degrees to the glass and pull smooth top-to-bottom strokes, each overlapping the previous one by a few centimetres. Keep even pressure — the rubber edge, not force, does the work. On wide panes, pros pull sideways or in a continuous S-pattern (fanning), but overlapping straight strokes give the same finish while you learn.
4. Wipe the blade, finish the edges
Wipe the rubber with your cloth after each stroke — a wet blade re-deposits water as fine lines. Finish by running the cloth along the pane’s edges and sill. Done: the glass is dry, and there is nothing to buff.
