2025 Buyer’s Guide: Best Window Cleaning Equipment in South Africa

A fast route to the right kit — what to buy first, what to leave until later, and what each piece of equipment is actually for.

The best window cleaning tool for almost every job is a stainless-steel squeegee with a fresh rubber, paired with a microfibre washer. Everything else — poles, kits, pure-water systems — exists to get that pair to glass you cannot reach. Buy the squeegee and washer properly first, then buy reach only as high as your tallest window actually requires.

This guide picks a best option for each job rather than listing everything we stock, and says plainly where the cheaper choice is the right one.

Best tool by job, at a glance

Your job Best tool Roughly
Interior glass, ground floor 35cm squeegee + 35cm washer + bucket R1,156 as a kit
Shopfronts and large panes 45cm squeegee — fewer passes per pane R437
Single-storey exterior 4m telescopic pole with squeegee R2,248 as a kit
Double-storey 6m pole kit R2,651
Third-storey or awkward angles 9m pole kit R2,881
Cleaning for money, daily Water-fed pole on purified water from R14,570
Solar arrays Rotating brush machine from R18,400

Best squeegee: 45cm stainless steel

Size to the pane, not to the price. A 45cm squeegee clears a shopfront in one pass where a 35cm needs two, and every extra pass is another chance to leave a line. On domestic windows the reverse applies — a 45cm blade fights the frame, and the 35cm is the better buy.

Stainless steel over plastic matters for one reason: the channel stays straight. A bowed plastic channel lifts the rubber off the glass in the middle of the pull, and no technique fixes it.

The part that actually decides your results is the rubber, not the handle. A blade dulls after roughly 40–60 hours of glass and starts leaving fine lines long before it looks worn. Replacement rubber is R98 for a 71cm length you cut to size — the cheapest performance upgrade in window cleaning, and the one most people leave far too long.

Best washer: 45cm microfibre with a spare sleeve

The 45cm washer carries enough water to keep a large pane wet while you work, which is what stops the glass drying ahead of the squeegee. Match it to your squeegee width or go one size up, never down.

Buy the spare sleeve at the same time. A sleeve that has picked up grit will scratch, and once you are on site with one sleeve you will keep using it anyway.

Best pole: match the metres to your highest window

This is where most money gets wasted, in both directions. Too short and you are back on a ladder; too long and you are holding a heavy, flexing pole all day for reach you never use.

Highest window Pole Price
Ground floor, high interior 2m telepole R770
Single storey 4m telepole R1,092
Double storey 6m telepole R1,495
Third storey 9m telepole R1,725

Remember you reach diagonally, not straight up — on a pitched roof or across a garden bed, a 6m pole gives noticeably less than 6m of vertical reach. If you are between two sizes, size up. Above 6m, weight in your hands becomes the limiting factor rather than length, which is where fibreglass earns its premium over aluminium.

Best kit for a first buy

Kits are cheaper than the same items bought separately and remove the guesswork about what fits what. Pick by storey height:

If you are cleaning for money, the Pro Plus versions add the spare sleeve and spare 71cm rubber you will need within the first fortnight, which is cheaper than buying them separately later. Full breakdown in which window cleaning kit do I need.

Best setup if you clean for a living

At some point the squeegee stops being the bottleneck and drying does. That is when a water-fed pole pays: you scrub with a brush on purified water, rinse, and walk away — no squeegee stage, no ladders, no drying cloth. Complete kits start at R14,570.

The catch is the water. Purified water only dries spot-free below about 10 ppm, so you also need a way to make it. A TDS meter tells you which setup you need in about ten seconds, and the arithmetic — including why deionising resin alone gets expensive on hard water — is in the pure water setup guide.

Best for solar panels

Solar arrays are a different job: no squeegee, no detergent, and never standing on the glass. For one household array a soft brush on a telescopic pole is enough. For anyone cleaning arrays commercially, a 7.5m rotating brush machine covers ground several times faster than a hand brush, which is what makes per-panel pricing work. Method is in how to clean solar panels.

What not to buy first

  • A pole longer than you need. The most common overspend. Measure your highest window before ordering.
  • Cheap plastic-channel squeegees. They bow, and a bowed channel cannot be corrected.
  • Spray-on window cleaners. They leave a film that attracts dust, so the glass re-soils faster.
  • A pure-water system before you have the volume. Below roughly 200 litres a month the running-cost saving will not repay the equipment for years.

Frequently asked questions

Which cleaning tool is best for windows?

A stainless-steel squeegee with a fresh rubber, used with a microfibre washer. Between them they do the wetting, the lifting and the clearing. Everything else in a kit exists to extend their reach or to purify the water they use.

What is the best window cleaning equipment for a beginner?

The Basic Kit at R1,156 — squeegee, washer and bucket — if your windows are reachable. Add a pole only when you have a window you cannot safely reach standing on the ground.

Is an expensive squeegee worth it?

No, usually not. The handle and channel matter less than most buyers expect; the rubber matters more. A mid-range stainless channel with rubbers changed every 40–60 hours of use will out-perform an expensive squeegee running a tired blade.

What size squeegee should I buy?

35cm for domestic windows, 45cm for shopfronts and large panes. If you only buy one and your glass is mixed, take the 35cm — it handles large panes slowly, whereas a 45cm simply will not fit small ones.

Do I need a water-fed pole?

Only if you are cleaning regularly, at height, for money. It removes the drying stage entirely, but it needs purified water to work at all, and that is a system rather than a single purchase.
